DRIVING
If you hold an ordinary driving licence or international driving permit (car, moped, motorcycle), you can drive any category of small vehicle shown on your licence for up to 12 months from the time you became resident. After this period, you must apply for a UK licence.
In the meantime you can apply for a provisional driving license and you will need to drive under the following conditions. displaying “L” plates, be supervised by a qualified driver and being precluded from motorways.

DRIVER AND VEHICLE LICENSING AGENCY
We maintain the registration and licensing of drivers in Great Britain. We also maintain the registration and licensing of vehicles, together with the collection and enforcement of VED, in the UK.
This information helps us get the right drivers and vehicles taxed and on the road, as simply, safely and efficiently as possible.
Responsibilities
We’re responsible for:
recording driver endorsements, disqualifications and medical conditions that affect your driving capacity
issuing photocard driving licences
issuing vehicle registration certificates to vehicle keepers
taking enforcement action against vehicle tax evaders
registering and issuing tachograph cards
selling DVLA personalised registrations
helping the police and intelligence authorities deal with crime
providing anonymised data to those who have the right to use the service

INSURANCE
You must, by law, have motor insurance because if you injure someone or cause damage to someone’s property while driving you must, by law, compensate the other person. The minimum type of insurance necessary is Third Party Only. Comprehensive policies also cover damage to your own car. It is illegal to use a motor vehicle on a public road without the proper motor insurance.
The Police and DVLA have a computer database that identifies if there is a valid certificate of Insurance for your vehicle and who is entitled to drive your vehicle under that policy.
Anyone else who wants to drive your car must be named on your insurance policy and this will cost extra.
MOT
Cars over three years old must pass a Ministry of Transport (MOT) test every year. It is an offence to use a vehicle over three years old on a public road without a current MOT test certificate.
Police and DVLA have a computer database that identifies if there is a valid MOT for your vehicle. You must be able to produce to the Police on demand:
Your driving licence
A valid insurance certificate
A valid MOT certificate, if your car is over three years old.
ROAD TAX
Since 2014 a paper tax disc is not longer issued. It is an offence to use a vehicle on a public road without vehicle tax having been paid for that vehicle. You can pay vehicle tax for either 6 or 12 months from the Post Office, call 0300 123 4321 or apply online at www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax#more-information If you attend at the Post office you will need to take the following documents with you:
The payment for you vehicle tax.
Your bank or building society account details to set up a Direct Debit.
You might also need your MOT certificate (if your car is over three years old).
Your vehicle log book (V5C) in your name or the green ‘new keeper’ slip from a log book if you have just bought it.
DRIVING AND RULES OF THE ROAD
All drivers should read the Highway Code, it helps to prevent accidents by making sure everyone is using the same rules when driving. In this section you can find some of the most common rules, buy keep in mind you need to buy or loan from your local library the Highway Code.
SPEED LIMITS
Generally, speed limits will be as follows but signs will indicate:
30 mph (48 kph) - built up areas (e.g. towns and villages)
60 mph (96 kph) - single carriageway (for cars)
70 mph (112 kph) - dual carriageway/motorways (for cars)
USE OF MOBILE PHONES
You must NOT use a mobile phone when driving. If you do, you may be fined and receive penalty points on your driving licence.
SEAT BELTS
Seat belts must be worn by the driver and all passengers. You can be fined for not wearing a seat belt. The driver must make sure that passengers under the age of 14 years wear the correct type of seat belt.
A child under 3 years old must use an approved child’s car seat.
ACCIDENTS
If you are involved in an accident when driving you must STOP. If anyone is injured or damage is caused to something other than your vehicle, you must give your name, address and insurance details to anyone who has a reasonable reason to ask for them. You do not have to inform the police in the case of a minor accident but if there is any doubt call 101 or, if the accident is serious, call 999 and ask for the Police.
